33. You have permission to make mistakes

Uncategorized Jun 30, 2020

Unconfident eaters and exercisers make a mistake by believing their mistakes matter.

If I asked you to try for a whole year to make a mistake that hasn't been made by someone else before you would have a hard time doing it.

Doing something wrong or badly is not the issue. If anything it's the expectation. Nobody gets good at anything without making mistakes.

An issue I see often in myself and those I work with is whether or not mistakes are recognized and used to set us up on a better path for the next time.

Samuel Beckett said it right: "No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better."

Errors, mistakes, and failure are for learning. They are as natural to the pursuit as an eraser is to a pencil.

People who stop learning are those who seem to never take a wrong step. They are afraid of failing.

Those who never stop learning look at mistakes as information.

They learn from them and move on.

Sometimes clients ask why Pillar Coaching is set up the way it is and what makes us so different from other fitness and diet solutions. One of my favorite things to tell them is: "We give you permission to make mistakes without judgement."

You can almost see the world lifting from their shoulders when they hear it.
